Team Leader
Join our team at Mitre 10 Ponsonby as a Team Leader and play a vital role in inspiring Kiwis to love where they live, work, and play.
This is a key leadership position within our store, where you’ll be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, leading and developing a team of retail team members, delivering exceptional customer service, and creating a positive, safe, and engaging shopping environment.
This is a hands-on role. You will spend a high percentage of your time working alongside the team and supporting customers on the retail floor.
What you’ll be responsible for:
- Collaborating with the Store Manager and leadership peers to achieve company objectives, maximise sales and profitability, and provide strong day-to-day leadership
- Leading the daily operations of designated retail departments
- Taking accountability for retail service delivery, merchandise presentation, sales performance, stock-to-shelf recovery, cost control, and team productivity
- Supporting the Store Manager with recruitment, onboarding, development, and performance management of team members, including some roster management and timely resolution of team issues in line with company values
- Leading and supporting marketing initiatives, promotions, and in-store events to ensure successful execution
- Driving training, coaching, and development to build a capable and engaged team
- Championing health and safety practices in line with company and national requirements
- Acting as a Key Holder, including opening and closing the store
- Cash handling and POS operation as required
What we’re looking for:
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in a retail environment (highly desirable)A strong customer-first mindset with a proven ability to deliver outstanding customer experiences
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and engage a diverse team
- Solid understanding of retail operations, including sales, merchandising, inventory management, and health and safety
- Confidence to lead, coach, and build trust within a team, along with strong problem-solving, time management, adaptability, and attention to detail
- A proactive approach to promoting safe work practices
- Physically fit and comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment
Technical skills and scope:
- Competency in basic software systems (e.g. Excel, Word, communication platforms), Point of Sale systems, and exposure to rostering tools
- Basic understanding of health, safety, and wellbeing practices within a retail setting
- This role includes key holder responsibilities, direct leadership of approximately 10–15 team members, and regular engagement with the Store Manager on financial performance and wider business strategy
