Smith’s Mitre 10 MEGA is a proudly family-owned Christchurch business committed to delivering exceptional customer service to every customer, every time. This is an exciting opportunity to join our Papanui store and play a key leadership role in one of Christchurch’s largest garden centres.

We are looking for a motivated and capable Garden Centre 2IC to support our Garden Centre Team Leader with the day-to-day leadership and operation of the department. This role is Sunday to Thursday working 40 hours per week.

You will assist with communicating daily priorities, organising workloads, coaching team members and ensuring tasks are followed through to completion. When the Team Leader is away, you will take responsibility for the department and ensure the team remains safe, organised and focused on delivering an outstanding customer experience.

Our Garden Centre offers much more than live plants. The department includes pots and planters, potting mix and compost, stakes and plant supports, sheds and greenhouses, garden-care products and a wide variety of seasonal gardening solutions.

What you’ll be doing

• Providing visible day-to-day leadership and support to the Garden Centre team leader
• Leading by example through exceptional customer service, professionalism and a positive attitude
• Helping communicate daily priorities, workload expectations and departmental goals
• Taking responsibility for the department when the Team Leader is absent
• Helping customers find the right products and solutions for their projects
• Supporting the care, rotation, replenishment and presentation of the department

We are looking for someone who:

• Has leadership qualities and the confidence to positively influence and support others
• Is organised and able to manage priorities, task lists and follow-up
• Is passionate about providing exceptional customer service
• Communicates clearly and builds positive working relationships
• Enjoys coaching others and helping team members develop
• Is physically capable of working on their feet and safely completing the lifting and handling requirements of the role

Previous leadership, supervisory or senior retail experience would be an advantage. Plant, nursery, horticultural or garden-product knowledge would also be beneficial, but it is not essential. We are more interested in finding someone with the right leadership qualities, customer focus and willingness to learn.
